New Friends

I had the pleasure of speaking with Amaresh Kollipara.  I look forward to doing a deal with him in the future. He does strategic consulting and financial analysis.

Who else? Lots of folks.  Robert Richards, PhD. was great.  He has a neat scheduling software with Stottler Henke.  David Shaw, president of Global Uni-Docs, I wish I had better connections for him.  Maybe some day.

Oh Valérie Léveillé, B, Eng., PhD. Of Nexplasmagen Inc. http://www.nexplasmagen.com/

Brilliant, I am sure she will be a great business woman. She had the hottest technology.

Katya, thanks for the karaoke, translation and fun time.  If

There were two ladies I hade a late night discussion about knowing things, but Socrates is only the start.

I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.
~Socrates

"I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance."
~Socrates 469 - 399 BC
http://members.tripod.com/~mr_sedivy/quotes1.html
"The only thing that I know for certain, is that I know nothing."
http://www.snowbizz.com/Diogenes/Socrates.htm

Socrates himself said, "One thing only I know and that is that I know nothing"
http://sophies-world.com/SophieText/socrates.htm

And the result of the whole discussion has been that I know nothing at all. For I know not what justice is, and therefore I am not likely to know whether it is or is not a virtue, nor can I say whether the just man is happy or unhappy.
~Plato's Republic, Book 1, Thrasymachus responding to Socrates

Phaedrus. Who are they, and where did you hear anything better than this?
Socrates. I am sure that I must have heard; but at this moment I do not remember from whom; perhaps from Sappho the fair, or Anacreon the wise; or, possibly, from a prose writer. Why do I say so? Why, because I perceive that my bosom is full, and that I could make another speech as good as that of Lysias, and different. Now I am certain that this is not an invention of my own, who am well aware that I know nothing, and therefore I can only infer that I have been filled through the ears, like a pitcher, from the waters of another, though I have actually forgotten in my stupidity who was my informant.
~The Phaedrus, by Plato
(Translation: Benjamin Jowett), Socrates Critques the Speech

Innovation at Berger King

Hey you can get a good burger anywhere, but does every one offer a fun experience?  BK is going to re-make Burger Kings and have hip burger kiosks.  What fun?  Yes I’d love to “pimp my whopper”.  In other news BKC is up over 29% on the year!

Blackstone a Dividend Play?

Why would you buy what the smartest guys in the room are selling?  The owners of FIG and BX knew the frenzy of private equity when they saw it and sold at the top.  Bravo.  However as financials have fallen from their sky high valuations now one may start to look at them as a value play.

Blackstone is giving now a 7.8% yield.  Not bad!

Even if it only grows steady from here or doesn’t move much.  In this low interest rate environment nearly 8% div yield isn’t so bad.

Sucked to be in BX!!!

How much lower can Blackstone go?  Down nearly 60%.  Lets check it out vs the S&P500

Upside to [BX] why not, but it may take a year.  Until then enjoy some Yield taxed at 15%

Correlation continues!

A friend of mine mentioned that that his financial advisor was telling him that he should invest more in foreign stocks for the diversification and return.  My friend said that he felt that foreign stocks were too correlated with the US markets.

Is he right?

2years EEM and S&P500

Over the long run the Emerging Markets looks slightly Corrilated

S&P500 and EFA

What we are seeing is that there is a strong correlation but a high beta.

Carry Trade still going strong

Carry Trade,

The FXY is the currency shares of Japanese Yen.  Basically it is a basket of Yen that is purchasing Japanese Treasuries.  It is an ETF and a good way to play the Yen/Dollar pair easily.

SPY is the exchange traded fund of the S&P 500

Check out the revese correlation (one year chart)

The Carry Trade is still in effect

Met with Will

I met with Will Harrell of EMA.  They provide 3rd party research for pension fund consultants.  Their tools were unbelievable and I fully intend to purchase them when we go in that direction.  I encourage any money manager or fiduciary to talk to will and see what EMA has to offer.
